Thank you for the comments over the last few days. Many of these have been useful, in providing answers to questions.
I guess I'd better work on my "Barra" trip posting. Though Barra is not on my list of places I am considering moving to, due to the very unacceptable broadband service, we still had an enjoyable time there and came away with much to think about.
One thing I would recommend is coming here in winter.
ReplyDeleteIt's one thing visiting in spring, summer or autumn but when a storm blows through you'll see a different side of the island. It's often commented that you measure how long a newcomer stays in winters and people have been known to leave after one.
Winter does enhance the remoteness of the place, it's quieter - less people visiting, the mainland is less accessible and there can be a feeling of isolation.
Personally, we like the winters here but they're not for everyone.
I agree with Tony's comment. Bear in mind that in December, the sun rises at 9.15 am and sets at 3.30pm. When the day is overcast, with rain and / or wind, if not hail, it can be very gloomy. For days on end. If you are still enjoying it after two winters, you've got what it takes.
ReplyDeleteMy first winter (2004/5) saw the worst winterstorm in more than 50 years, with winds gusting to 134 mph and the loss of 5 lives in storm surge flooding in South Uist. I'm still here :-)
